K–3 Level II Enrichment

At Faithful Shepherd Catholic School, we use Treffinger’s Level of Service Model as our K-5 Enrichment Program service framework.  If you would like to learn more about this model, please click on this link: FSCS K-5 Enrichment Program.  

Level II enrichment is FLEXIBLE by its very nature.  It can take place within the classroom and/or outside of the classroom.  Student participation in level II enrichment may change throughout the year, week to week or unit to unit.  Level II enrichment may differentiate by readiness, by student interest or by critical or creative thinking strategy.  FLEXIBILITY is the nature of K-3 level II enrichment.

Kindergarten Level II Enrichment

Mrs. Maertens, the K-5 Enrichment Teacher, provides level II enrichment in collaboration with the Kindergarten Teachers in order to provide the best learning fit in and outside of the kindergarten classrooms.  Below are the different areas of level II enrichment.  Level II enrichment occurs a few times per week for 25-30 minutes per time.

Kindergarten Level II Reading Enrichment

Level II reading enrichment is a flexible group comprised of students from all the kindergarten classes and is a push-out experience that occurs for 25-30 minutes per class.

  • Unit 1 – Non-fiction
  • Unit 2 – Poetry and Psalms
  • Unit 3 – Folktales

Kindergarten Level II Math Enrichment

Level II math enrichment is a flexible group comprised of students from all the kindergarten classes and is a push-out experience that occurs for 25-30 minutes per class.

  • October – Spooky Addition Math
  • November – Turkey Addition With Doubles Math
  • December – Christmas 100 Chart Riddle Math
  • January –  March -Geometry/Spatial Sense and Fractions
  • April-May – Sudoku and Logic Puzzles

Kindergarten level II enrichment – Interdisciplinary units

  • Fall – Trees and Seeds – Mid-September – Early October
  • Winter/Spring – Stars and Stargazing – February-March

Grade 1 Level II Enrichment

Mrs. Maertens, the K-5 Enrichment teacher, provides level II enrichment in collaboration with the First Grade teachers in order to provide the best learning fit in and outside of the first grade classrooms.  Below are the different areas of level II enrichment.

Level II Enrichment – The Dot Lesson

Mrs. Maertens reads the story The Dot and works with the first graders to create their own Dot creation, which is then displayed near the front staircase.  This occurs around September 15th, International Dot Day.

Level II reading enrichment is a flexible group comprised of students and is a push-out or push-in experience that occurs for 25-30 minutes.

Grade 2 Level II Enrichment

Mrs. Maertens, the K-5 Enrichment Teacher, provides level II enrichment in collaboration with the Second Grade teachers in order to provide the best learning fit in and outside of the second grade classrooms.  Below are the different areas of level II enrichment.

Mrs. Maertens will introduce herself and do a Read-Aloud of Peter Reynold’s book entitled, The Dot.  This picture book focuses on the themes of creativity, courage and collaboration.  The second grade students will be creating “dot” creations for our International Dot Day “Dot Gallery.”  This display will begin on the bulletin board outside of the volunteer room and will commemorate International Dot Day  which is celebrated on or around September 15.

Level II Reading Enrichment Information

  • Meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:55-11:25am.
  • Is a flexible group of students clustered by reading readiness.
  • Supports differentiation of reading in the 2nd grade classrooms.
  • All students in the second grade classrooms will be clustered by readiness; this means that all students will be in guided reading clusters grouped by Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading Levels within and outside of the classroom.  Mrs. Maertens will support differentiation by working with a cluster of students.  The second grade teachers will decide what reading readiness cluster Mrs. Maertens will work with.
  • Second grade level II reading enrichment is a push-out class that occurs twice each week for 30 minutes.
  • The second grade level II reading enrichment will occur in units that focus on second grade reading targets.

Unit 1 – Flat Stanley – Reading Targets  – October-December

  • I can describe characters, the plot and the setting in a story.
  • I can describe the traits and roles of characters.
  • I can describe the author’s purpose.

Unit 2 – Non-Fiction/Information Text Reading Targets – January-March

In this unit, students will learn about outer space and space exploration.  Below are the unit reading targets.

  • Skip meeting during MEA Week.
